Currently, this network brings together 52 member institutions who manage over 80 MPAs and 27 partner organizations and institutions from 18 Mediterranean countries. The MedPAN Executive Secretariat is based in Marseille.
The 2013 MedPAN Workshop and the MedPAN General Assembly have been held in Hyères, France, from 12 to 15 November 2013, organized in partnership with the Port-Cros National Park, the RAC/SPA, and the French Marine Protected Areas Agency. The workshop gathered more than 100 participants from 16 countries. This year the workshop was focused on "Surveillance and regulations in MPAs: how to maximize the efficiency and sustainability of actions". In order to bring this complex subject up to date, the MedPAN has initiated a study in 2013 focusing on the regional level to identify gaps, best practices, needs and strengths in terms of surveillance and regulation enforcement with a view to build the capacity of Mediterranean MPAs in this domain. Following this study, the MedPAN 2013 Mediterranean exchange of experience workshop aimed to prepare the implementation of a MPA managers’ support program from 2014 to build their capacity in the surveillance and enforcement domain.
The Association for Protection of Aquatic Wildlife of Albania (APAWA) has participated in this workshop as a MedPAN partner organization. APAWA has distributed the NETCET leaflet (English version) to the participants of the workshop and has introduced the NETCET project during the presentation of APAWA’s activities, highlighting the importance of integration and synergies between issues on MPAs regulation enforcement and conservation of cetaceans and sea turtles in the Mediterranean
