Sea Turtle Research and First Aid Center in Albania - inauguration

On 26th February 2016 Herpetofauna Albanian Society opened the very first Sea Turtle Research and First Aid Center in Albania. Even it was a heavy rainy day the lovers of the sea turtles and our work, representatives of the high level from the Ministry of the Environment; Ministry of the European Integration; Ministry of the Education; The National Agency of Protected Areas; Professors of Conservation Biology from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Tirana; Researchers of the Center of Flora and Fauna, FNS, UT; Lac Municipality; The Administration of Lezha Region Protected Areas; Veterinarians; Fishermen; School Children; Media and other lovers of Sea Turtles in Albania participated the inauguration event organized in Patok by HAS.

The center was co- funded by the IPA Adriatic 2007-2013 CBC Programme and Herpetofauna Albanian Society through the NETCET Project. It is located in Patoku lagoon and its main objectives are: providing first aid to the sea turtles found stranded or injured along the Albanian coast, organizing research activities for the sea turtles and awareness raising campaigns for the conservation of such charismatic animals as Sea Turtles are.

The center has a recovery room with 2 tanks with all the necessary equipments for the first aid and research activities, and a meeting room for the awareness raising. It will be opened not only to sea turtles and tourist, but also to Universities, Schools or other state and private institutions interested on the research activities, capacity building and awareness raise for the sea turtles.
