Description of the partner organisation
The Institute of Marine Biology was founded in 1961.Through its history, the Institute has been organised and re–organised, and it's name changed a number of times. Since 1997 it bears its current name, and in 2004 it joined the University of Montenegro, a member of which it remains to this day.
The decades–long programme of the Institute, the only institution in Montenegro dedicated to the research of the sea, is grouped into several linked areas:
-
biological, ecological, taxonomic and hydrographical research of marine life
-
population dynamics and suggestions for rational exploitation of the economically important species of fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods
-
neurophysiologic research on marine organisms
-
research and protection of flora and fauna as well as the hydrographical properties of the Boka Kotorska bay
-
advancement of the marine fisheries and aquaculture and dealing with the artificial fertilisation of certain economically important species of marine organisms
-
oceanographic research of the south Adriatic
-
preservation and advancement of the environment in the south Adriatic area (Montenegrin litoral).
Description of the activities
Institute is involved in three projects from the IPA second call and one of them is the NETCET project. Since 2007, Montenegro has signed the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS) and become a member of this association. Work on the conservation of the cetaceans and sea turtles has been limited to date, mostly due to the financial reasons.
In the NETCET project staff of the Institute will receive the necessary knowledge for the monitoring and conservation of the cetaceans and sea turtles which they will carry out and also, a public campaign will be carried out throughout the project to inform the interesting parties of the necessity of the protection of cetaceans and sea turtles in the Montenegrin Sea and Adriatic Sea in general.
